Project Career Launch Students Get Lessons in Film

Earlier this week, we had another amazing visit with our Project Career Launch students, but this time it featured an incredibly special guest! As you may remember, our last visit was with our CCP (Community College of Philadelphia) Project Career Launch students, where they practiced mock interviews with PA CareerLink and resume building. This time, the Project Career Launch students at Drexel had a chance to learn about film with the Philadelphia Film Society.

Project Career Launch at Drexel and the Philadelphia Film Society have been partnering together for the last several months, which has opened doors for students to view movies at the Film Society after they have a lesson the previous week. This allows them to learn more about the specific film they are going to view, and the different technicalities that go into filmmaking.

Jace, who works in the Film Society’s Education and Community Programming team, has been the facilitator for these sessions. She even mentioned the possibility of potential internships for the students at the Film Society. While we were there, the students learned the difference between experimental films, documentaries, and feature films. She then led an interactive classroom discussion in which students were able to voice their opinions on different trailers they watched of short films.

Mrs. Deeden, one of the classrooms leaders, describes the experience as “an amazing partnership the children really love and enjoy.” The students were attentive and engaged and gathered for a picture at the end!

There is lots of magic happening, and a future filmmaker is in the works. Thanks to classroom leaders Mrs. Deeden and Ms. Atkins, Beth Flaugher from CIS for inviting us to sit in on the class, the Drexel Autism Institute’s Transition Pathways Program for hosting us, and an even bigger shout out to Jace from the Philadelphia Film Society for facilitating the discussions.
