Our latest installment on Black Trailblazers in the disability rights community features Thomas Reid and his Reid My Mind podcast on NPR, which amplifies stories around disability.
Reid was already an adult when he lost his vision as a result of cancer. A New York native who lives in PA’s Poconos region, he got his start producing stories for the PA Council of the Blind’s monthly audio magazine. 15 years later, he’s got his own Podcast on NPR.
Reid uses that platform to broadcast the voices and stories of people living with a disability. And as a blind man who is also Black, he saw the podcast as a useful space to share his experiences at the intersection of those two identities, and a gathering place for others with similar experiences to share their own.
We love Reid’s project for the stories he shares, the music woven into the program, and the platform it gives people with disabilities to speak about their lives, helping change the way listeners perceive and think about people with disabilities.
