CIS Commemorates Black History Month

by | Feb 1, 2024 | Black History Month, General, News

Happy February, everyone! Today marks the start of Black History Month. All month long we’ll be sharing a range of resources and stories touching on Black history and disability rights, from spotlighting Black trailblazers in the disability community to sharing stories that explore some of the intersecting challenges facing Black Americans with disabilities.

This year, we also want to take a more personal approach and share stories that come from the CIS community, so keep an eye out for upcoming posts that show the positive impact that CIS staff-members, participants, and partnering organizations are making in a diversity of communities throughout the region.

For today, we invite you to read a bit about Lois Curtis, lead plaintiff in 1999’s  Olmstead v. L.C. case that established the right of people with disabilities to live where they wish and to receive adequate support (check out the link in our bio).

And if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, stop by The Franklin Institute on Saturday for their day-long Black History celebration. Music, food, performances, and access to all the museum has to offer—it’s sure to be a good time. More info at the link in our bio.
