There’s a genius in our midst! Give it up for Alice Wong, who last week was named as a 2024 MacArthur Fellow for her wide-reaching impact in increasing the cultural visibility of people with disabilities and widening cultural understanding of disability.
The prestigious MacArthur “genius” grants are awarded each year by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to 20-30 individuals who’ve shown “extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits,” and come with an $800,000 prize.
In 2014 Ms. Wong founded the Disability Visibility Project to “amplify the unfiltered voices of disabled people and explore the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender identity, and disability.” Her leadership and advocacy have been transformational, and her work, like ours, helps people with disabilities become more visible in our society.
