As we spend NDEAM honoring the role of people with disabilities to the economic recovery, we also want to bring attention to the communities that sustained people throughout the pandemic.

One of them blossomed right here in Philadelphia, through Drexel University’s Autism Institute. Between January and June of 2021, CIS and the Institute partnered to connect students from the School District of Philadelphia with representatives from companies and organizations around the city.

In a time of isolation and anxiety about job prospects, the virtual speaker series allowed School District students with autism or other disabilities to connect with leaders from diverse industries. It gave them community, and a space to dream and plan for their future careers.

Participating companies included Comcast, Lowe’s, and more, and the meetings were a welcome digital gathering space for students in a time when they were largely stuck at home.

Even better news? Connections made during these meetings led a number of students to be hired at participating businesses.
